New York Times pits me against Rahm

Sunday’s New York Times Chicago News Cooperative story on Rahm Emanuel’s promise threat to implement a “Common Core” curriculum as mayor says I “expressed misgivings about the curriculum plan” when actually I was only responding to a general question about the common core standards.

I did say, as quoted, that we believe national standards will lead to a national standardized test and even more misuse and abuse of testing than we have now.

Emanuel apparently claims his plan will reduce teaching to the test.

This reminds me of when Paul Vallas bragged about discontinuing the Iowa test, but then went ahead and started using the next test, the state IGAP test, as a high-stakes test.

It really doesn’t matter what you call it – if it’s high stakes, it’s going to result in teaching to the test.
