Alderman says he’s embarrassed

UPDATE: Alderman still apparently embarrassed by CTU’s Karen Lewis but not by Mayor Emanuel who, according to Lewis, “exploded” at her during a conversation in his office about his signature longer-school-day effort, pointing his finger at her, yelling and telling her, “F— you, Lewis.”

No, Ed Burke is not saying he’s embarrassed by the fact that 30 of his colleagues have been sent to jail during his 40 year tenure. According to Wikipedia,

“Between 1972 and 2009, a total of 30 Chicago aldermen were indicted and convicted of federal crimes such as bribery, extortion, embezzlement, conspiracy, mail fraud and income tax evasion. Three additional aldermen were indicted for similar offenses but two died before federal prosecutors could bring them to trial and one, Anthony Laurino (39th) was too sick to stand trial.”

Not about the fact that he operates a lucrative law practice that specializes in property tax appeals while chairing the all-powerful City Council.

Not about the fact that he and his wife, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke, have an $8.3 million campaign war chest, though both generally have run unopposed.

No, Ed Burke is embarrassed because Karen Lewis, the president of the Chicago Teachers Union, opposes CPS’s going back on the current contract to force teachers to work an extra 90 minutes per day while the district holds back 50% of the contractually promised raise for the coming year.

Wow. It’s kind of like having Michelle Bachman call you stupid.
