A plea from the Cassell Local School Council: Restore our budget!

casselllettterimageLocal school councils all over Chicago are doing what they were designed to do – stand up for their children and their schools. Faced with hundreds of thousands, and in some cases millions of dollars in budget cuts. some LSCs are refusing to approve their budgets as an act of protest.

We are concerned that threats may be emanating from CPS, or at least from CPS messengers, that LSC members voting against their budgets may be targeted for removal for missing training hours, or that staff may be removed or budgets further slashed in retaliation. We have assured LSC members that there must be due process for any LSC member removal, and that PURE can help with training if necessary.

Here’s a 9-page letter (big file…) from the LSC from Cassell School on the far south side. This school faces $451,000 in cuts which will result in class sizes over 40 in the primary grades, loss of many highly effective teachers, along with drama and fine arts education, and a severe reduction in their ability to provide for the school’s high special needs population.

They have sent this letter to CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett and Mayor Emanuel with copies to their alderman and state representatives. Maybe you can share their story with your networks, too.
