PSAT for 12-11-12: Make merry! Watch and share new CTU cartoon satire of corporate reformers

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

The Chicago Teachers’ Union has done it again! They have gifted us yet another sharp tool for our public school support kit. This time it’s a spot-on satirical cartoon skewering on Chicago’s corporate reformers. Dangling at the end of the lampoon are some of PURE’s favorite goofballs: Penny Pritzker, Bruce Rauner, Robin Steans, Stand for Children, and, of course, Mr Secret Sauce himself, Mayor Emanuel.

Rauner isn’t taking it well (fat cats hate to be made fun of). Fuming to the Sun-Times, Rauner said, “To be lectured by a leader of a failed union who protects a failed school system would be laughable if it were not so sad. These union leaders are a joke, just not a funny one.”

CPS called the video “mean-spirited.” OK, more mean-spirited than closing schools and sending students to worse alternatives? Not tracking these students as promised? Flunking students based on one test score when the test is not designed for that purpose, and when flunking usually hurts more than it helps? Ignoring a state-mandated facilities committee that had gone a long way towards holding CPS and the city accountable for their unfair funding decisions, then replacing it with a “commission” that claims it will truly this time trust us listen to the community, as it holds last-minute pseudo-hearings in churches run by Mayoral pals? More mean-spirited that that?

It’s just a cartoon, folks. Watch it, share it, enjoy it. We need the laugh. Be merry!

Hedge funders latest plan? More experimentation on CPS children

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

The latest offer of “help” from the hedge fund crowd comes from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, which is establishing ELP Venture, a “venture philanthropy fund” to offer rewards for more education innovations to inflict on CPS students.

According to the Sun-Times, “Rather than focus on proven reforms, the group hopes to develop ‘the new, yet-to-be-proven reform,’ said class member Gillian Darlow, a principal at Civic Consulting Alliance.”

How have they done so far? Well, Global Council Chair, Bruce Rauner, was one of the corporate brains behind SB7 and its 75% “strike-proof” vote standard that was supposed to be too high for the Chicago Teachers’ Union to meet. We know what happened there. Rauner also supports the Noble charter network schools, one of which is named after him. We all know what those schools are like.

Rauner admits to his lousy track record in education reform: he “warned the group that the ‘school improvement wars’ was an important struggle but also was ‘ugly, dirty’ and ‘not fun.’ He said he provided $20 million to help with education reform and 80 percent of it was ‘wasted.’ ’’

But now they’re going to collect $10 million to fund more “unproven” boondoggles.

Hey Bruce – why don’t you mess around with your own children’s schools for a while and leave ours alone?

Cathie Black-style schools CEO for Chicago?

Friday, April 8th, 2011

On the heels of news that non-educator, mega-rich Cathie Black has been shown the door after only 3 months as New York City Schools Chancellor, this item appears in the Sun-Times’ Michael Sneed gossip column:

“Sneed hears rumbles mega-rich venture capitalist Bruce Rauner, who burps money and made certain a ton had been tossed into Rahm’s election campaign, is being eyed as the city’s new school CEO.”

Rauner most likely earned his place as a CEO wanna-be by crying BOTH TIMES he saw Waiting for Superman. His wife, Diana, is on Rahm’s education transition team and is president of the Ounce of Prevention Fund. While she does have early childhood credentials, she is probably the first former investment banker to hold that position at the Ounce.

Bruce has been messing with CPS schools for a while now. He’s a member of the Board of the Renaissance Schools Fund, chairman of the Education Committee of the Civic Committee, a major contributor to the Academy of Urban Schools Leadership, chair of the ACT Charter High School board of directors -AND he has his own charter school, the Rauner College Prep Charter High School.

Greg Hinz reported in Crain’s last year about this scheme of Rauner’s:

to sell empty and near-empty academic buildings to a privately capitalized venture fund that he and perhaps some other well-connected types like the Gates Foundation would put together. Those same buildings then would be leased to charter schools….

So, I think we have a pretty good idea of what he’ll do as CPS CEO. But, the Cathie Black model of district leadership seems to be coming apart at the seams these days.
